"Going, Going… Gone!"In the good old days, auction season was confined to sticky hot summer days, listening to the auctioneer's song. With the advent of the electronic realm, treasure hunting at auctions is now available 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. By far the most popular and well-known online auction site is eBay ( http://www.ebay.com ). This is despite the fact that eBay spelunking is an often a confusing and frustrating experience. - Read the description of the item that you are bidding on thoroughly. This is important so that you know exactly what item you are bidding on as item descriptions are often complex and can contain hidden details about items. The last thing you want to miss is the note about the chip in the otherwise flawless teacup that you are thinking of bidding on. - Also check the location of the seller and where in the world they are willing to ship. Unfortunately for Canadians, sellers in other parts of the world are sometimes unwilling to ship to Canada. However, it is often worth the effort of contacting sellers that don't list Canada as an option, to ask if they would be willing to make an exception. - Confirm methods of payment accepted by the seller. The most common method for online payments is a service called PayPal ( http://www.paypal.com ) which allows you to make payments using your credit card. It can take up to a month to set up a PayPal account, so it is important to make sure that you are fully registered with PayPal before you start any online bidding adventures. Some sellers do not accept PayPal payments, and prefer certified cheques or international money orders. - The most important piece of information to note is the seller's feedback rating, which is basically e-Bay's method for keeping sellers and buyers honest by allowing both sides of a transaction to leave a permanent comment about their buying and selling experiences with each other. Trustworthy sellers will always have a percentile rating in the high nineties, it's also important to note how many transactions the seller has in total. And don't forget to leave your own feedback when you complete a transaction! If you ever have problems with a transaction, it is best to contact the seller via email before leaving feedback. Most sellers are usually willing resolve issues in a reasonable manner. posted by Kusari 9:26 PM |
